Analogies for web design

Our primary analogy for 'building a website' is architectural. We argue, on the homepage, that Vitruvian design theory can be applied because the a website, like a building, needs to meet user needs, to be structurally sound and to have an aesthetic value appropriate to the culture of the user group it serves. But this is not to discount the value of alternative analogies with respect to the stages in creating a web project. Several are listed below.
