I have just been reading an article by Heidi Adkisson called Examining the Role of De Facto Standards on the Web (http://www.boxesandarrows.com/archives/examining_the_role_of_de_facto_standards_on_the_we b.php) at the Boxes and Arrows (http://www.boxesandarrows.com) site and came across a link to her new site at webdesignpractices.com (http://www.webdesignpractices.com/). The site summarises some research she has undertaken on various aspects of web design, particularly navigation. The article is great and the site is really useful.
See also this related link to an article on Jakob Nielsen's site (http://www.useit.com) called "When Bad Design Elements Become the Standard (http://www.useit.com/alertbox/991114.html)". All good stuff.
