View Full Version : Internet Magazine bites the dust

After 10 years on the newsstand, Internet Magazine has just announced that the current issue (July 2004) will be the last. Presumably not enough people felt the same way I did about it. I still think it's the best "general" magazine on internet issues but...
The magazine claims "changing demographic" etc. and clearly they just weren't selling enough copies. It does seem to me that the new generation of internet mags are all more specialist/focussed and perhaps there are now too many individual interests that a "general" magazine just can't cover in depth.

So long and thanks for all the fish...

that is a shame. IM had become my mag of choice too.
What are the recommended replacements? .net? Internet Works?

I suppose .net is the closest in terms of coverage but I just find it too "teenage" for my liking.
As a subscriber, I'm being offered Broadband World as a replacement. I've never read it before but it appears to cover some of the same ground - site and product reviews, web building etc. Since our village exchange is due to go digital on 23rd June (counting the days), broadband is not far off for me, so it may be appropriate.

What a shame - I was about to subscribe!
I always found it difficult to find in the newstands - perhaps that was a sign of things to come, it's circulation was too low.
Maybe it's because more people prefer to get their web news and tips on-line (eg. Francis). I prefer the magazine to get away from the computer, but imagine a high percentage of web people get it all online.
Maybe this is true of all magazines now, regardless of their subject - entertainment and news can come from many digital sources - web, TV, phones, PDA, laptops, etc etc. - all competing for magazines' share of the information market.

I used to read Internet Magazine from cover to cover but have been finding it dull for a good while now.

can't beat Ideal Gardens eh Tom?
have been looking at Web Designer magazine as a substitute, though it doesn't appear to have its own web site, which for a web design magazine is a little odd.
Computer Arts? MacUser? Internet Works? Wired?

Don't even bother looking at Broadband World. It's the worst kind of consumer trash. Pictures of girlies on the front and articles on how to make money from online gambling - I ask you, who reads this crap?!
