After many failed DIY efforts I have just received a batch of scans done by a bureau (http://www.noduffstuff.co.uk/profile.html). They are heck of a lot better than my attempts, even with a Nikon Coolscan - so I am very pleased. Since digital cameras have won the argument, I do not think this experience will be relevant for many people but there are other lessons: (1) technologists tend to be good at technology (2) the firm has no appreciation of design (3) the business name and the URL are dumb (4) good web design and content management require attention to Commodity, Firmness and Delight - as well as a good Business Plan.
