As a follow on to yesterday's question about how to handle broken and fixed implementations of CSS, and IE's DocType switching feature, A List Apart do a nice feature on it (http://www.alistapart.com/articles/doctype/). I haven't read it in a while, but having a flick through now, it appears that it even switches DOM implementations back and forward. Weird, and probably more dangerous to the user experience than broken CSS.

The article came out in April 2002, so Opera, Moz etc may do things differently now.

On right clicking a page and selecting 'View Page Info', Moz tells you what mode the page is written in which comes in useful occasionally:
