I foolishly offered to write a tutorial on a HTML > XHTML+CSS conversion that I did for an online work magazine. No worries there (apart from having time), but it's going to be probably translated into French. I know that some people on this forum have taught abroad - do you know how code is referenced in foreign languages? For instance, are adjacent-sibling selectors known as that (as that's what they're called in the W3C spec) or are they translated into the language of the speaker?
To change the subject slightly (and to not over-post this post) here's an interesting article by Eric Meyer on structural naming (http://www.meyerweb.com/eric/thoughts/2004/06/26/structural-naming/). And just when I was happy with "top", "sidebar" etc...

Technical translation is a specialist area. I would guess that the French would either use a literal translation or invent their own words. On the other hand, W3C are a "world" authority so maybe American English would be tolerated. The short answer is: I don't know.
The Meyer article is a good one and does make sense but as a site builder it would be more useful to use a structural nomenclature. I guess it depends who its for. I agree that a standard would be useful but I'm not entirely sure that that degree of abstraction is helpful.
Oh, is he? Well done!

Thanks David. This might be a mailing list job as my French colleagues are very slow in replying to emails, there's a deadline looming and I want to get this out of the way. Luckily we have an International department with people that know many languages, so I'm probably going to have to get them to translate the article. But they're not Web based at all, hence the question.
It's a low key ceremony, hence the colour and size!

If the firm is willing to pay someone then the easiest/quickest way to get a translation is at http://www.translatorscafe.com/Cafe/JobPost.asp

Thanks Tom. It's doubtful I feel, but maybe worth a go.
