The new chat bar on this forum is an application called CometChat (http://www.cometchat.com/). It can work as a standalone but is designed specifically to be integrated with community software like vBulletin, WordPress etc.

I had been meaning to trial it for a while after deciding that it was probably the best chat add-on out there. It took about 15 minutes to install and configure and cost only $49 for this basic version. I have to say I'm quite impressed by how easy it was to set up.

Clearly, the design is straight out of Facebook but that's no bad thing and many people will be already familiar with it.

Any feedback would be welcome.

The only thing is, is that I spend so long chatting that when I want to go somewhere on the forum i'm then logged out! :D Other than that, it's great!

That won't happen if you use the "Remember Me" checkbox when you login. The timeout if you don't do that is 15 minutes.

Well, the first day of use for CometChat was quite eventful, we've made over 1100 messages so I reckon that's a pretty good test. The one-to-one chats work well but we have yet to try out the chatroom feature. In theory, we can have a group chat and I can see that being quite useful - but that's for another day.
