Introducing the Holographic Versatile Disc (http://www.optware.co.jp/english/what_040823.htm), the latest mass storage medium. It can hold up to 1 terabyte of data (200 times the capacity of a single layer DVD) and has a transfer rate of 1 gigabyte per second (40 times that of a DVD).

When I saw my first exhibition of holographic plates (about 22 years ago) I wondered how long it would be before someone found a practical use for them. Looks like the waiting might be over - unless this turns out to be another of those technology "breakthroughs" that never make it to market.
