If you're looking for work in web design, you could start with the Smashing Magazine jobs section (http://jobs.smashingmagazine.com/). Although most of the jobs are US based, there are a number in the UK. Here's one in London (http://jobs.smashingmagazine.com/j/Freelance-Web-UI-Designer-Developer/1586632) that may be suitable.

I wonder what the salary is. What is the "going rate" for a web designer do you think?

I think that the best place to look for design jobs is the creative pool (http://www.creativepool.co.uk/employee/faj_result.php?similarids=345&action=similarjobslistings)

Many recruitment companies that look for professionals in the design industry, post their job vacancies in there.
What I found very good about the site is that you can narrow your search by skill level (junior, middle-weight, senior and director levels),
by kind of contract you are looking for like fulltime, part time, contract and by Location. Salaries also appears in the site (yearly rate, daily rate or hourly rate)
Is also interesting the titles of the jobs post. They can be very specific, giving job titles such as "junior ecommerce webdesigner", "senior webdevelper with SEO" or "junior UX designer" to mention some of them.
I used this site in the past to get freelance work and it worked very well as long as I kept updating my details very often. Recruiters tend to check the most resent CV or applications. So... the trick is to update your details as more often as you can (maybe just add an extra letter to your surname name and then delete it  ) This will make your CV to re appear in the top of the list. If you don't do this frequently, recruiters think that you already found a job.

Good luck in your job hunting!

PS: When I just arrive to London 5 years ago, I was looking for jobs as a "flasher"... thinking that, that was the word used for a flash designer... it took a while until somebody told me what flasher really mean!!!! :ouch:
