Has anyone come across the Safari Bookshelf (http://safari.oreilly.com/) by O'Reilly? It provides online access to a great deal of content from their wide range of IT related books. A massive amount of content is available for free as a preview of the service but you can also get a 14-day free trial to the full service which gives you 10 books or you can subscribe for continued access.

$20/ month seems quite a lot but its a good service. I believe they have another alternative, for teachers, under which you can put together your own book from all the material they publish. They then print it for you to distribute to students. I read an article about it somewhere and my recollection is that you need a fairly large print run. They encourage teachers to sandwich their own material (eg assessment questions) with the O'Reiley material. Its worth watching. I think it is the ProQuest (http://safari.oreilly.com/?mode=About) system.

An attraction for me is that I am never happy about my computer book purchases. I tend to buy them in a moment of desperation and then they sit unread on the shelf until they are out of date.
