Okay, for all those people who say that CSS isn't widely adopted enough to be useful, and that browser support is too flakey, blah, blah, blah, and that big sites are still using tables because they don't want to risk alienating their client base...Yahoo! have redesigned using CSS (http://www.yahoo.com/beta).

According to Digital Web (http://digital-web.com/news/2004/09/yahoo_with_style/) there are some validation issues, and at the moment only IE users get the new front page by default (the above link will take all users to the CSS layout), but for someone as large as Yahoo! to make the change...well, there's no excuse now.

The home page actually looks better - less cluttered and far easier on the eye. Upgrade information here (http://www.yahoo.com/upgrade) and here's a more code-centric write up (http://9rules.com/whitespace/css_redesigns/yahoo_css_redesign.php).

It does look better. But isn't this a result of an improved graphic design, rather than the coding? Its a bit as though they have shifted from plasticated gloss to pastel emulsion. And why do they stick to a, relatively narrow, fixed column width?

I suspect them of adopting the old Hollywood axiom: nobody ever lost money by underestimating American taste.
