Tom pointed me to an excellent article by Tom Mombiot (http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2011/aug/29/academic-publishers-murdoch-socialist). It makes me wonder why someone doesn’t start a website which offers genuine competition to the academic journal publishers. It should be the kind of assault MP3 made on the record labels. I think every university lecturer would welcome and support this but can see two problems (1) articles must be published in peer-reviewed journals because of the Research Assessment system (2) it may be that some universities gain a competitive advantage from the fact that other universities cannot afford access to all the journals.
But I also think there are ways round these problems. Does anyone have any ideas on how to do it? It could be a good subject for a web business and a Web Thesis Project.
