The effect is known as CSS Parallax Scrolling and the first example I know of was the Silverback (http://silverbackapp.com/) site by Clearleft (tutorial (http://thinkvitamin.com/design/how-to-recreate-silverbacks-parallax-effect/)) but it's become a popular method for showing off your design skills (http://www.awwwards.com/20-great-websites-with-parallax-scrolling.html).

hi everybody, so this is some kind of a new trend in web design? but does it add any meaning to the whole page except from making it very visually exciting? I mean it feels great but shouldn't it be used more carefully? After playing a lot with these websites I felt like that the message somehow got lost or was altered, I don't know, what do you think?

The thing I personally do not like about those websites is that they tend to be very heavy, because they are full of code. As David pointed out it is a way to show off your skills but in my opinion no way to create a website for the people.

I think it all depends on how it is used and who it's aimed at. The Silverback example is very subtle and doesn't get in the way of the message. On the other hand, the Nike example IS the message.

How tricky is it? I'm dying to give it a go.
