Smashing Magazine has just launched it's redesigned interface, it is one of the first examples of responsive design I've seen on a magazine site and they've made a pretty good job of it. Interestingly, at some resolutions, the adverts are removed. I suspect they may refine the design once they see their ad revenue metrics. In general, it works very well and it's definitely something we're going to be seeing more of in 2012.

Works well on iPad, quite a difference between landscape and portrait. I can't see where the ads would go in the portrait layout without placing them in between posts.

This is all really nice, but I wander how many people worked on that and how long it took to be developed. I bet it is a lot.

We looked at Smashing Magazine on the university compters (1024px?). I was surprised to see the "responsive look" and in particular the absence of adverts. I thought that was their main income stream? They also were cash strapped a year or two ago. I bet they appear back rather quickly!

I really like a smashing responsive design. Hovever as we have already seen it looks quite different on IE starting from IE7:blink:. I didn't consider IE6 as it has already become past. Unless the majority of users still stick with IE this design isn't yet responsive. Also if, for example, I booked an advert on their home page and say they prommised 30k visitors every day. I'm not sure what persent is IE users visiting their website but this number won't see my advert as it is not avaliable for you if you are using IE browser.
Although I enjoy content of smashing mag the design still isn't cross-browser responsive.
