Have you ever stumbled across a website that seems only to consist of a single page containing contextual ads and links? I've seen a few of them and often wondered what they are all about - now I know. It's all about "monetizing your domain portfolio". Got a domain you're not using? Put it to work earning income.

Basically, the system works the same as Google AdSense except that you don't have to put the work into providing content. There are companies out there who will populate your domain with content, mainly newsfeeds and links. You get paid per click.

Sounds too good to be true, so I've just signed up with DomainHop.com (http://www.domainhop.com) and registered a new domain name as a trial.

I'll let you know how I get on.

this could be an interesting "experiment"; finding and registering a domain name that is something people might punch in speculatively (or accidentally).

my money would be on:
- names of not yet but soon to be famous film stars
- foreign words - which are more likely to be free on .com but mean nothing to english speakers
- misspelt popular domain names (amzon, amizon, etc).

one might argue that such a non productive practice is questionable ethical, perhaps all money raised should go to the poor (right, that's me then :P )

I was talking to a colleague about this and he mentioned that porn sites offer DIY site kits that you can put together of your domain and get a share of the click throughs. I wonder if the revenue stream from those is higher than that of just plain directory listings?
