For some time now I've been looking for a reasonably priced single volume book that covers all the graphic design basics with good examples. Today I found it. Design Basics Index by Jim Krause (http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/071532053X/qid=1114458033/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_0_1/026-3082635-9959611) is an excellent resource. Comprehensive, handy and just over a tenner. I will be adding this book to the key texts list for Webpage Design.

Interesting, I'll add it to my wish list. I've got this (http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/1568982496/026-2223486-0680400?%5Fencoding=UTF8) on order and have this (http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/0877731934/026-2223486-0680400) on the way. Quite similar in subject matter, so we'll see what's what.

They look very interesting Francis. The other book I've been impressed with recently is Universal Principles of Design (http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/1592530079/qid=1114503353/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_2_1/026-3082635-9959611). This is about design generally rather than just graphic design but it is very good indeed. A must read for all design students. I have ordered several copies for the library.
Maybe you could give us a quick review of those books when you get them Francis.
I have to say that after a better look at Design Index Basics, I am even more impressed. Not only is it full of excellent examples demonstrating principles of graphic design but it is itself a beautifully designed book. I am going to order a bunch for the library.

Got a lot of reading to do, but I'll try to review them when they turn up (or rather, when I've read them!). I'm hoping to get my design skills up to scratch to do a site for my brother's book (http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/0091901731/qid%3D1114529191/202-2494213-2311045) which is out in February next year.

James, have you had a chance to look at it yet? What do you think?

Hi
Yes, I got it last weekend. I've only had a quick look at it so far but my first impressions are that it is an excellent introduction to design.
It is not web focused at all, which makes a nice change. It gives practical examples of fonts, graphics, colours, spacing etc.
I've bought a number of books recently and plan to post a review here as soon as I get the chance.
Cheers.

Re Will Storr's book, please pass on the info that Star Wars have made $3bn from the films and $9bn from selling goods (shirts, toys, games) related to the films. I suggest using the website 'fly baloons' for whacky products. He could ask people to vote on them and then get the most popular item made in China. Seems like a good use for a website!
