Oooh, now this is good. Some genius-type person has managed to put in some kind of distance measuring scripting into Google maps so you can see how far a journey is (this is my twice weekly run (http://www.sueandpaul.com/gmapPedometer/?centerX=0.2590370178222656&centerY=51.132508034259224&zl=4&fl=m-e-h-0-1&polyline=ywawHwnq@j@fQ%60IhRjBzZi@pUwCdPoT%60%5Eh@ tWlHoFlJ%60%5DjBvdAuAl%60Ak@jSwj@yYud@i%60@eU%7D%5 Bi%5B%7D%5B%3Fqd@kFwXTg%60@h@io@jBoUaC_%5C_Coc@nTu I%7E%5DjDnTlEfUsGtb@bO)).

To get it to work the the UK, you have to zoom right out of America, scroll to find the UK and then zoom in to wherever you're interested. There are usage instructions on the site, although the main thing that you probably need to know is that double clicking puts an anchor point down.
