Currently in beta, TypeTester (http://typetester.maratz.com/) is a really useful online tool to compare different fonts. It has 'safe fonts' (ariel, verdanda etc), lists of Win and Mac fonts, you can play with the leading, word spacing, alignment and more. This could be a really helpful tool. Lots of design-based sites (Zeldman for one) use Lucida Grande as their primary font - it's a standard Mac font - so now you can see what you're missing out on!
