I'm not entirely clear what is going on in the Mambo camp but my feeling is that although Mambo is free, it's not open source. Enter Joomla! the open source version of Mambo, which looks as though it will move in it's own direction or, at least, the one pushed by its developers. It's an interesting development and one that means more choice of quality free CMS. Those of you with Fantastico on your cPanel can try it out now.
