I have been looking for a simple, light-weight forum to run with PHP and MySQL and I've come up with what I think is a real gem. miniBB (http://www.minibb.net/) is exactly what I've been looking for. It doesn't have any of the bells and whistles of other forums, rather, you install a basic functioning forum that is stripped down to the essentials. To this can be added modules as required. You want to be able to add user avatars? Add the module for that function. I've gone for the minimalist approach as this forum is just temporary and for a specific project but I had it installed and skinned in under half an hour. Despite it's simplicity, it has some sophisticated features such as the ability to use mod rewrite. Even phpBB can't do that.
