View Full Version : XP/Mac wireless network with shared printer

Mmmm, hoping for some Phil-like help here ;)
I need to wirelessly network my parents' XP home machine to a hand-me-down Mac running Tiger. Neither have any wireless capability built in and they need to share a printer. How?!

i guess the easiest way would be to use a wireless router / print server like this USR one. (http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/ProductInfo.asp?WebProductID=239030)
you can plug a usb printer into it and share it with the network. Obv. you'd also have to get wireless cards for the two machines as well.
If you want to save on the cost of the router, you could fit wireless cards to the two machines and have them connect direct, plug one of them into the printer and share it. Tiger will happily print to a Windows shared printer (or indeed emulate Windows shared printing and allow pcs to print through it). A bit less convenient as the printer attached machine has to be switched on for shared printing to work.
Alternatively, you could bluetooth enable everything and get a Bluetooth USB printer adapter (http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0002DCKZI/qid=1136146739/sr=8-2/ref=sr_8_xs_ap_i2_xgl/026-4536748-2582849)
Personally i'd go for the option that will need the least maintenence - the router / print server option. It would be the most expensive, but if my mum is anything to go by, its worth the extra money to minimise the inevitable panic phone calls when things stop working!

Cool, cheers. It's probably easier if I hard-wire the Mac to the router and printer (I don't fancy trying to fit a wireless card to an old eMac) and then wirelessly connecting the PC to the network. It would save on two network cards as well.
