Skype (http://www.skype.com/) seems like a great idea, especially if you're calling another Skype user - free phone calls! The disadvantage, by the looks of their intro movie on the homepage is that you have to be on/near a computer for it to work. Has anyone tried it or thinking about trying it?

Not tried it. I don't use the phone a lot but being tied to a computer would annoy me. I also wonder if there is a slight lag, like when news reporters in the field are talking to the studio?

The technology is not new - I used to make VOIP calls using NetMeeting and ICQ in 1999. The sound quality was good, even though I only had dial-up at the time, but there was a long delay between talking and the other person receiving, it was like using a walkie talkie not a phone.

I imagine this is an absolute must for people who make a lot of overseas calls to relatives etc.

Skype was bought by eBay last year - I'm looking forward to seeing how they integrate it with their core business.

skype's great, cheap (or free) calls abroad, great quality and a breeze to install. i - rather sadly, I know - also use it to chat with my GF when she's in the next room. The new version also has videoconferencing, though PC only at the moment.
I've just ordered a usb thingy and skype handset, will let you know how well it works (or doesn't).
