View Full Version : How not to do it...

So, has anyone seen a small nuclear mushroom cloud over Medway campus today? Specifically over the Marketing department?
I'm (almost) speechless...

I take it you are referring to non other than the new UoG website.
It is absolutely what I would expect. And one can just imagine how the conversation went...
"Why bother getting a designer involved - surely it can't be that difficult. Hey! I got a free copy of Xara 3D on the cover of this month's Amateur Web Designer - let's put that baby to work. Designers, hah! Who needs em - look what we did."

Very nice
Ah, if only the design alone was the problem!
Yesterday it took me several attempts to find my department. One link took me to an error 404 page, the other to a login screen. Once I did find some content, I then had to work out that where absolute links still existed I would need to replace www with w3. Some school pages were found to be only available to staff and students of that school. One department's homepage had been replaced with the marketing page for that department and no visible way of getting to any of the real content. URL persistence appears to be dead and gone, rendering dozens of printed publications useless. I could go on, but I think it speaks for itself!

Being one of the "lucky ones" in our school who has access to edit the site I had quite a few visitors - all of whom were in a panic yesterday!
"We can't find the school's homepage"
"How do I find bannerweb"
It did make me laugh!
There are also quite a few issues with the site over screen settings too! Quite a few of our team have a variety of different views!
