I just stumbled upon Icons of England (http://www.icons.org.uk/). It's a very nice website in design terms. A relatively simple site but graphically strong. This is a new project, begun in January 2006 and has been funded to the tune of £1m. All I can say is that you don't get much for your money these days.
It doesn't appear to be that well supported in terms of users/nominations. It's been running almost a year and there are only 719 nominations. Funding apparently runs out in February 2007 although the site will remain online.
Given a million quid, I'm sure we could have done a better job of SEO. Here are the Alexa details (http://www.alexa.com/data/details/main?q=&url=www.icons.org.uk).

Well, I just nominated an icon, so now there are 720. :)
