Sure some people will have already seen this but thought I'd post for those who haven't.
Last week https://www.gov.uk/ was unanimously voted the winner of the designs of the year which is currently being shown at the Design Museum - http://www.designsoftheyear.com/

It was designed by the Government Digital Service and the site is a portal for all of the UK government's websites.

I was initially very surprised when I visited the site and was sure I must have typed the wrong URL. The Judges stated it was "well thought out, yet understated design."
Design Museum director Deyan Sudjic said "Gov.uk looks elegant, and subtly British thanks to a revised version of a classic typeface, designed by Margaret Calvert back in the 1960s." My first impression was that it looked like the page you get when you mistype your url and it sends you to a listing page of available urls to buy.

However after playing around with it a while its clear that the focus, as it should, has been on clear usability and accessibility.
