Default To h1 the logo of a website or not to h1? That is the question..

This is a question I had since the very beginning.

Keeping in mind SEO and Accessibility issues, do you regard assigning an h1 tag to the logo of the website a good or a bad practice? And why?
Of course, the h1 text is going to be put aside using image replacement. Or perhaps another way is to assign it to the tagline of the website.

I found an interesting article here. However, I haven't ended up with an answer to my question. What do you think?

Generally it's a very good article but I'd question the principle of using WordPress as a justification for a particular working practice.

In answer to your question - there is no right or wrong answer - it depends on the nature, content and structure of the site. That said, you'll get more SEO value from using different H1s on each page, so that's the approach I have always taken. But there is also a semantic argument too. Is the site name/logo really a heading? I would say not - and just because WordPress does it doesn't make it right.

I also got the impression that the author based his theory on WP too much. However, I checked ALA and the use of h1 tag for the logo was obvious. So I couldn't ignore the fact that such a respectable website would use this technique in that way..

On the other hand, Smashing Magazine changed the design (since the artice was published) and.. what on earth.. no h1 tag is used anywhere in the page!
If there's a trick and that's why I can't see it, please let me know!
