Spritepad
Great tool for generating image sprites easily http://spritepad.wearekiss.com/
Really easy to use, more details including example of some sprites created using this on my blog post
Other sprite creation tools are discussed in last month's NET magazine (I'm always at least a month behind) but I tried this one and it was really easy to use.

This looks like a good time-saver, I'm still undecided whether to go with a standard icon set or give font icons a go for my thesis. There are a lot of advantages style-wise with the font sets but not nearly as much choice!

I thought spritepad was great - really helped me get a handle on sprites. Had a look at the font icons link they look good, are they HTML5 only?

The data attribute is new to HTML5 and allows meta-data to be stored for elements and used in css/js. I don't see why you can't just use classes and reference the icons directly in the css with the :before pseudo class. I need to have a go as I would like to use them for my thesis but I can always go back to standard sprites if I'm not happy with the results.

The full article explains it better, you can just use classes but then you need a css rule for each icon. The way they're suggesting looks really neat, I'll give it a go anyway. Also, this app generates custom font files for icon sets so you only have to load what you need. Nice.
